A Green Escape in Groningen

Landgoed Westerlee, a boutique resort in the Netherlands' Groningen province, is a hidden gem for eco-conscious travelers. This restored 18th-century estate, surrounded by lush gardens, instantly won me over with its blend of sustainability and charm.

I spent my days cycling through the flat, windmill-dotted countryside—a Dutch classic! The resort's bikes made exploring nearby villages like Heiligerlee a breeze. For a dose of adventure, I tried paddleboarding on the nearby Oldambtmeer lake, laughing as I wobbled but loving the serene views.

Food at their restaurant, De Orangerie, was a delight. The farm-to-table menu featured local asparagus and smoked eel, paired with a crisp Dutch white wine. Breakfasts were equally impressive, with fresh stroopwafels and artisanal cheeses that had my foodie heart soaring.

The spa's eco-friendly sauna and herbal tea lounge were perfect for unwinding. Landgoed Westerlee is proof that luxury and sustainability can go hand in hand, offering a peaceful retreat with a Dutch twist.

A Historic Countryside Retreat

Dating back to the 18th century, Landgoed Westerlee began as a grand estate for local gentry, its elegant manor reflecting Groningen’s agricultural wealth. Restored with eco-conscious design, it now blends historical charm with modern sustainability. As I strolled its grounds, I imagined the generations of farmers and nobles who shaped this serene corner of the Netherlands.

More Eco-Adventures

Cycling was just the start. I joined birdwatching tours in the nearby Reiderwolde nature reserve, spotting herons and geese. Canoeing on the Oldambtmeer offered tranquil views, and farm visits let me taste fresh cheeses and meet local producers. The resort’s yoga classes in the garden were a zen highlight—every activity felt like a nod to sustainable travel.

Discovering Groningen’s Charms

Groningen’s treasures are close by. The village of Heiligerlee, site of a historic 1568 battle, has a fascinating museum. Winschoten’s windmills and Bourtange’s star-shaped fortress were quirky delights. I explored Groningen city’s vibrant markets and the Groninger Museum’s bold art. The Wadden Sea, a UNESCO site, offered seal-watching tours—each spot added depth to my Dutch escape.

When to Visit Landgoed Westerlee

Spring (April to May) is magical, with tulip fields in bloom and mild weather for cycling. Summer (June to August) is lively but busier, great for lake activities. Autumn (September to October) brings crisp air and quiet trails, my favorite for a peaceful retreat. Winter (November to March) is cozy, with indoor spa vibes, though outdoor adventures are limited.

  • Tip: Rent an e-bike for longer countryside rides.
  • Don't Miss: The estate's organic garden tour.
